Thrival Academy: Indy Social Studies Teacher


Thrival Academy: Indy is a study abroad one-year public high school which combines blended learning strategies with cultural immersion in order to incubate young, globally-minded community leaders.

Thrival Academy: Indy is hiring for teachers for our founding year as an Innovation Network School in IPS in 2018-2019. We are looking for dedicated, experienced educators who are interested in a radically new educational model and want to live, learn, and teach abroad for a portion of the school year.


  • Co-create unit plans and lesson plans for and teach US history + creative writing block (semester 1) and US history + expository writing block (semester 2)
  • Serve as the Advisor for a cohort of up to 20 students, which includes:
    • Developing & managing student Personalized Learning Plans; includes academic goals, non-academic goals, and post-secondary planning
    • Conducting weekly 1:1 advisor meetings
    • Serving as the primary liaison to students’ families
    • Developing a trusting relationship with all advisees in order to serve as the primary academic and social-emotional support
  • Work cooperatively with Thrival and Rustic Pathways staff to plan and implement lessons tied to immersion units
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of experiential learning excursions, service learning projects, and field trips
  • Collaborate on curriculum planning for civics & citizenship
  • Act as chaperone with students on  trips, both locally and abroad
  • Facilitate student community service projects and fulfills requirements for students to attain community service credit
  • Work collaboratively with school leader at staff to establish and maintain a school culture which aligns to Thrival Academy: Indy vision and mission
  • Submit requests for necessary course materials to be ordered in a timely manner
  • Effectively implement purposeful, student-centered, and globally-focused curriculum
  • Employ digital tools and platforms such as Summit Learning, PLATO Learning, and Google Classroom
  • Attend and actively participate in teacher co-planning workshops, professional development activities, and team and staff meetings to improve teaching craft
  • Travel internationally with the school for 3 months for the immersion phase of the year
  • Incorporate cultural competence throughout the curricula and learning experiences for students
  • Regularly collect, track, measure, and communicate student performance and growth to school leaders, parents and other stakeholders
  • Additional duties as assigned by supervisor


Professional Experience

  • Highly qualified teacher with an Indiana secondary teaching credential in social studies, preferably geography or US history; dual credential in secondary ELA highly preferred
    • Dual certification in Special Education highly preferred
  • Proven track-record of student achievement with clear, quantifiable student gains, at least 2 years teaching experience within an urban education environment, preferably Indianapolis
  • Experience fostering the academic, social, and emotional well-being of students
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize both qualitative and quantitative data to inform decision making
  • Experience working with diverse populations of students and families
  • Willingness to work nonstandard hours and occasional weekends (e.g. for Parent Meetings)
  • Experience with culturally-responsive, problem-based, competency-based instruction, and/or personalized learning strongly preferred
  • Experience with digital learning platforms
  • Experience with cultural competence training and/or restorative justice practices strongly preferred
  • Spanish language proficiency/fluency a plus

This position requires domestic and international travel. Applicants must be able to spend 3 months abroad at our international campus during each academic year.


Salary and benefits commensurate with experience
Room, board and roundtrip air travel will be provided for international portion of academic year
